Eight
It was Tuesday afternoon, and Elizabeth was on her hands and knees in the school gym, helping DeeDee with the lettering for Winston and Ken's magic act. The gym was filled with activity. Olivia Davidson was taking Patty Gilbert's measurements in one corner and discussing what sort of costume would be best for her dance routine. Mr. Collins was showing Ken how to set up the audio equipment, and Todd was experimenting with the spotlight.
"Liz, can you help me with the backdrop for Patty's dance later?" DeeDee begged. "I'm really nervous about it. I've got other people working on some of the other sets but I want to do that one myself. And I want it to be absolutely perfect."
Patty was doing a short dance to a piece of music from West Side Story, and DeeDee wanted the set to be "something that gives the whole dance a mood."
Elizabeth sat back, wiping her forehead with a dusty hand. "I don't know, Dee," she said honestly. "It looks like I'm really busy this afternoon. Do you think you can get started on your own? I'd be happy to tell you what I think once you've got it underway."
DeeDee went pale. "I'll never be able to do it by myself!" she wailed.
"Can't you get someone else who's helping you with the sets to work on it?" When DeeDee vigorously shook her head no, Elizabeth sighed, "OK, OK. Let me go to see how Todd's doing with the lighting. I'll get back to you as soon as I can."
"What's wrong?" Todd demanded, putting down the cord he'd been repairing. "You look about as frazzled as this lighting system does!"
"It's DeeDee," Elizabeth whispered, slipping her arm through Todd's. "She's driving me crazy! Todd, the girl can't do one single thing by herself. I had to find people to help paint sets. Do you realize she's called me four times since she and Bill broke up? And that was only yesterday!"
"Poor Liz," Todd said sympathetically, giving her a hug. "I guess everyone's dumping their problems on you these days, huh?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "No one but DeeDee," she demurred. "Boy, I can see now how Bill must've felt," she continued. "Todd, that girl has absolutely no self-esteem. She called twice last night to talk about Bill. She wanted to know how I thought she could get him to come back to her. I told her the only thing I couldâthat she'd just have to accept his decision and get used to it. Then she started calling about the talent show. She's so panicked about doing even the simplest little thing without asking me what I think about it. Honestly, Todd, it would have been easier for me to go ahead and do the sets myself!"
"Hey," Todd said warningly, "I think you're about to get nailed again. DeeDee's coming over here, and from the look on her face, I have a feeling she needs help again."
"Oh, no," Elizabeth moaned.
"Liz!" DeeDee called, hurrying across the gym. "I've got an idea for Patty's set, but I feel uncertain about it.
