Kate sighed in frustration. She had reread the same sentence five times, and she could not seem to focus on the book in front of her. All she could think about was Adrien. His kind eyes and warm smile. His rugged face and strong hands. Good heavens, she thought to herself, I am acting like a love-sick debutante.
Although, for the first time in her life, she felt as though she would burst from happiness. Finally, after enduring so much cruelty, she was in a position that allowed her to be free from the burdens of her past. After all, why would she ever need to look back when her future was so bright?
Adrienâs voice broke through her musings. âI was worried you would have already retired for the evening.â
Kate turned to face him and saw him leaning up against the door frame, watching her. âI almost did, but I wanted to speak to you before I retired.â
A boyish grin came to his lips as he pushed off the door. âYou certainly know how to inflate a manâs ego,â he said, walking towards her.
Watching him as he sat down next to her, she admired his fine, dark tailcoat and his loosely tied cravat. She reached up and slowly retied it. As she finished, she boldly allowed her fingers to trail above his starched collar and marveled at the softness of his skin.
Her eyes flickered up to meet his and the love she saw reflected back at her was her undoing. Adrienâs eyes were so expressive, and they seemed to mirror his soul. How she loved this man! She wanted to learn everything about him.
She dropped her hands into her lap. âTell me about your family.â
Adrien furrowed his brow slightly. âI already told you that my parents died from influenza.â
Kate wanted to laugh aloud at his response, but it appeared that he truly believed that was the end of his story. âWhat was your mother like?â
A smile formed on his lips. âMy mother was my entire world while I was younger. She used to make up stories and would exaggerate every detail.â
Kate smiled. âThat sounds like someone I know.â
âMy mother used to steal me away from my nursemaid and we spent hours at the creek by our house. She taught me how to fish. It was our special time.â
âThat sounds divine.â
âMy father was firm but kind. He would allow me to sit in his office while he met with tenants, and he even taught me how to balance a simple ledger,â Adrien said, wearing a silly expression on his face as he remembered his youth. Kate intentionally remained silent to allow him to continue. âAfter my parents died within hours of each other, I knew that my life would forever be darkened.â
âHow old were you?â
âEight,â came his pained answer.
âYou were just a young boy.â
He frowned as sorrow lined his features. âI thought that my aunt and uncle did not want a sad little boy, so I always worked hard to keep a smile on my face.
