Nathan went outside, making a pretense of checking on the croquet game. He approached the dining room window and studied the ground, stepping between two plants. He exhaled quietly at the sight of definite impressions in the soft soil—shoes, clearly belonging to a man. Whoever it had been had walked along the length of the window and then stopped.

Thoughtful, he straddled the prints’ final position and peered inside the window, wondering what the watcher had hoped to see. He squinted against the glare of the sun and cupped his eyes for a better view. The object of the “ghost’s” attention could have been anyone, but it was with sinking clarity that Nathan recognized the spot where Eva had sat. Another glance at the ground had his heart beating in his throat. With the toe of his shoe, he nudged a single black feather sitting ominously against the dark earth.

“Winston! Looking to steal the silver later on?”

Nathan turned at Franklin Frampton’s teasing, forcing himself to chuckle as he made his way out of the bushes. He left the feather untouched. “You’ve caught me in the act,” he said, smiling and hoping it made him look carefree. He’d a sneaking suspicion it did not. Someone was playing games with him, and he felt the truth of it sink like a stone in his gut.
