Everly welcomed the sight of their high-rise apartment building looming in front of them as Darrell halted in front of it a half hour later.

She was still a little in awe of Walker’s reaction to her singing.

I bewitch him? He called me amazing?

The genuine, sincere compliments delighted her, of course. But it humbled her when he reminded her he’d heard her sing before she’d plowed into him and dumped her latte down his shirt and tie.

They’d had this strange, tenuous connection before she even knew it.

Talk about beguiled.

“Are we here?” Rico lurched forward and then leaned half over Everly, pressing his forehead against the window. “Yeppers.” He slunk backward with a sigh.

Darrell assisted Walker with gingerly extracting Rico from the car. The fresh, cool night air must have somewhat sobered him up.

Walker thanked his driver. “I’ll take it from here, Darrell. Thanks.”

“Night, sir. Ma’am.” He tipped his hat and then retreated to the car with a goofy grin shot Rico’s way.

“Manhandled? I likee.” However, Rico’s words weren’t as slurred and he walked under his own steam to the entrance, where the night guard held the door open. “Oh, you’re cute. In a kinda, sorta ex-military way. New here?”

“Yes, sir.” The beefy, dark-haired guy kept a straight face.

“Rico.”

“I know.”

“You do?”

“It’s part of the training, sir. To know the residents.”

“Very thorough.” He went to press his forefinger to the man’s impeccable gray uniform shirt, but somehow restrained himself from touching. He read the name plate. “Sergeant Hollerman, is it? You handsome man, you.” He nearly purred.

“I’ll tell my wife you said so.”

Rico tsked. “Always the married ones. Can’t I ever catch a break or a hottie of my own?” The brief sober minutes faded and his words jumbled out again.

“Okay. Time to get you upstairs.” Walker stepped in, taking over. He ushered Everly in first and then assisted Rico in next, allowing the man to lean heavily on him.

“Did we miss our window of time?” Everly waved a greeting absently at the other guard, who nodded politely from behind the desk, and then she sauntered to the elevators, stabbing the up button repeatedly once she arrived. “I really thought he was coming around back there.”

“Like a boxer. Punchy again.”

The ding sounded and the doors parted. Everly entered, waiting for the men to join her, and then pressed the number for Rico’s floor.

“Wee, wee, wee, all the way home!” Rico giggled, holding tight to Walker’s arm. “Muscles. Galore. Have you felt them yet, Eveie wvie?”

She winced, peeking at Walker under her lashes.

“This isn’t our first date, is it?” Walker couldn’t suppress his laugh.

“Are you talking to me or Rico?”

“Me, me, me!” Rico shot his hand up as if he were a kid in a classroom, waving it.

“Somehow, double dating takes on a whole new meaning.” Walker scratched his head, a perplexed look on his features.

Everly burst out in giggles. Rico joined her.

“Our adventure, remember?” She pointed out they were on this journey, wherever it might take them. The reminder sent a host of heightened anticipation swirling in her middle.
