The next morning, she wakes with the back of his head on her mind, the tantalizing nape, the particular slope of his shoulders.

* * *

All roads lead to Rome. She hates the imperialist construct of this adage, but she knows: if there is a mistake to be made, she will make it.

She could say: Tell me something about yourself. This is what other people might do.

* * *

Instead, when it gets dark, she slinks down into the closed store, looks around. Rummages in the back room for something to cling to: traces, relics from the other life. She finds a book of poems, an attractive red-and-white French edition of Les Fleurs du Mal. Inside it, the inscription reads: I will always love you. Yours, Charlotte. Spring 1998, Cambridge, MA. The hope, the humiliation of that always. All those mistakes made in dumb faith. She closes the book, sets it back, covers it up with a heavy crate of tomato puree.
