Willow
I clapped and swayed my body side to side as the choir closed out my motherâs sermon. Per usual, it was a packed house and Nicolai had blown the roof off. I typically ended up crying because I knew God really had been good to me. Not even in a materialistic way but just all around.
My mother led us in prayer before dismissing the church. I made my way to the pulpit but not before being stopped by every older lady in the building. Since I really grew up in the church, most of the women there had a hand in raising me. Whether it was babysitting me, feeding me, or teaching me how to be a lady. I learned a little piece of something from all of them.
âOh, Miss Willow,â one of the nosier and messier ladies, Mallory, gently grabbed my arm.
I mustered up my best fake smile. âHey, Miss Mallory. How are you doing?â
âOh, Iâm alright, Iâm just worried about you.â
âWorried about me for what?â I was confused because I hadnât done anything to cause concern for anyone.
She looked around before stepping closer to me. âWhat is this Iâm hearing about you and a young man by the name of Ajani?â
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â I tried not to become annoyed.
âWell, you better address these rumors before your mother hears. You donât want to give the poor lady a heart attack,â she looked around again.
I became even more confused. âMiss Mallory, what are you talking about? What have you heard?â
Before she could say anything else, I heard my mother calling my name. When I turned in her direction, I could see the pits of hell burning in her eyes. I hadnât seen that look since I was a teenager, and she had found out that I was having sex.
âWhatâs wrong?â I swallowed hard like I wasnât a grown ass woman.
âCome to my office, now,â she demanded without breaking her stride.
I looked at Miss Mallory and she shrugged before walking off. Slowly walking to her office, I couldnât imagine anything that wouldâve set her off so bad. Even if she heard that Ajani and I were messing around, that wouldnât be enough information for her to be that upset. When I got to her office, I could feel the anger radiating from her body.
âMa, whatâs wrong?â I asked again, closing the door.
âWillow, I know for a fact that I raised you to have good common sense! Are you selling drugs?â
My eyes bucked at her question. âMa, what the hell! No! Why would you ask me something like that?â
âIâm asking because Mallory and Helen have already approached me saying that you and some thug that youâre dating are selling drugs!â
I took a deep breath. I didnât know if I was more annoyed or hurt that my mother was even accusing me of that. âMa, you should know me better than that! You know what type of child you raised, and I would never do anything as stupid as that.
