CHAPTER NINE

Throne of Salt wasn’t unlike Throne of Cinders.

Perhaps that’s where the disagreements stemmed from. Both water and fire were still fairies. Both were Courts filled with souls that felt the same thing for different forces. Our hearts beat fast and our magic flowed through us like a lifeforce. The stars watched over us both.

But there was deliberate hate for fire in the Water Court. So far, there had only been outspoken disdain and fear in my own for water. Whatever motive spurred water on must be worth the damage. It must be worth the threat of war and the loss of life. Those odds were terrifying.

Chanson and Maxell and I roamed through the palace freely. Everyone kept a wide distance between us and them, though their eyes were filled with ire. The only consolation, if I could fairly call it that, was that the water fairies avoided the vampires even more than they avoided us.

The undead roamed as freely as we did, drinking synthetic blood from ice bottles and chatting freely amongst themselves. There was an air about them, as though they were untouchable. They had eyes for the fairies. Every single one of them had purple eyes besides Maxell and Masters. The purple eyes let the fairies know that they were sticking to their diet. Even though it was obvious from the leers and fang licking that if they could, they would suck every fairy bone dry.

Water fairies dressed more freely than those at home. Wispy gossamer outfits adorned their lithe, beautiful frames. They were coated in ice and salt, some adorned with seashells and others silver jewelry.

I didn’t see a goblin.

I didn’t see a whairy.

I didn’t see a human, nor a halfling.

I only saw vampires and fairies.

Something about that set my teeth on edge.

“Where are the others?” I asked under my breath.

Chanson’s hand lay on my lower back, never deviating. His other hung where his sword had been. “I don’t know. They were taken separate from us.”

I sought for Meek and Hoodlin for the hundredth time to no avail. There wasn’t even a whisper of them in the palace. “I don’t feel them.”

Chanson didn’t reply.

I pulled all three of us to a halt in the middle of an ice-covered foyer of sorts. Stairs jutted out in all angles, and so many fairies with blue-tinged skin and salt covered eyelashes moved dutifully throughout the palace.

The fairy nearest curled her lip up at me in particular. Her teeth were sharp, and her eyes were narrowed and yellowed with a long pupil. Like a shark, a knowing voice whispered in the back of my head. Even her ears were pointed like a fin. She smelled of salt water and I wanted so badly to erupt into flames for her enjoyment.

I blocked her path. “Where is the queen?”

She jumped back, hissing at me. “Get no closer to me, flamer.” She skirted around us.

“Flamer?” I repeated, hating the way the word sounded in her tinkling voice. It had been an insult. “Name calling?” I rolled my eyes.
