MAMMWASBACK in bed when Katie reached the house, but Dat still sat by the table. The lamp was turned down to a soft glow. She stood on the other side of the table, with Seth between them. “Paulina came by,” Katie said. “She was crying.”

“I imagine so,” Dat said.

“She said—” Katie paused. Should she tell Dat? She expected so, out of concern for Paulina.

Dat raised his head. “What is it, Katie?”

She had to tell him. “Paulina said that Seth was going to be a father.”

Dat let out a long sigh. “He brought up marrying her the Sunday before Mamm became ill.”

“She seemed distraught.” Katie closed her eyes, fighting back more tears. “I’m worried about her.”

“Do you think I should go to the Fisher place?” Dat asked.

Dat would have to shout when he arrived, in the dark. Would he frighten the family? Make things worse for Paulina? Katie thought of Ben. She could ask him to go, but then she’d need to tell him why. But perhaps he would deliver a letter for her. Except what if she spread the infection to both Ben and Paulina?

She put her head in her hands. Perhaps she could come up with a message for Ben to relay to Paulina, one that wouldn’t give away the depths of what was going on.

Perhaps there was a scripture that could convey Katie’s message. She thought of the words, We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. Paulina wasn’t persecuted, but she was certainly in despair.

Katie thought harder. The verses were eight and nine from 2 Corinthians 4. In verse six, it started with, For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

And the chapter ended with, While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Jah, perhaps that would communicate to Paulina to look to the future as she remembered that God loved her. She needed to look to her future and the future of her and Seth’s child, both on earth and in heaven.

“I have an idea,” Katie said to Dat. “I’ll ask Ben to relay a message to Paulina—Second Corinthians chapter four.”

Dat thought a moment and then said, “I think that’s a good idea. Go to the Bergers’ quickly, before it gets too late.”

Katie grabbed a dishtowel to wrap around her mouth and nose, lit the lantern on the back porch, grabbed her shawl, and then hurried out the door. She walked up the road and when she reached the Berger farm, she called out, “Ben! It’s me—Katie. I need to talk with you.”

John stepped out on the porch, holding a lamp. “Aren’t you under quarantine?”

“I am,” Katie said.
