Land Girls filling and ‘treading in’ silage into a silo of the then popular type, made from wire mesh lined with heavy waterproof paper (known as Sisalcraft). The crop appears to be unchopped grass, heavy and tiring to fork. The photograph was produced by Lorna Newell, and probably comes from Leicester.

Land Girls filling a silo at the East Sussex School of Agriculture, c. 1940. This was the first silo at the college; it was sectional and made by Gascoignes, the early producers of milking machines. The material was lifted on to the trailer with a Wilder Cut-Lift. It was then loaded by hand into the silo. Helen Beard (née Coward) is seen in the centre with the fork.
