Of course, for this point to carry any weight, it must be true that humanity is in the sort of desperate situation that uniquely requires God to become incarnate and suffer the cross. We are not in a position to assess that yet – we need the conclusions from subsequent chapters. We are, however, in the position to say that if one is prepared to grant the reasonableness of Christian beliefs concerning the sinfulness of humanity and the Trinity – including the possibility that the self-sacrifice of Jesus was the only way of saving humans, then the doctrine of the Incarnation is both philosophically coherent and morally acceptable – and even admirable. In short, it is fair to say that for a desperate humanity in need of radical divine assistance, God could have had good reason to go so far as to become human.[114]
