The gateway into Connemara from the north is through Doo Lough Glen, one of the most scenic passes in Ireland. The pass ends at one of Ireland’s few fjords, Killary Glen. A steady climb to the west of the crossroads town of Leenaun (sometimes Leenane) leads into the heart of the mountains, before another glacial pass leads to the sand dunes and beaches of northwest Connemara at Tully.

In 1849, at the height of the famine, hundreds of men, women and children marched up Doo Lough Glen to plead with the Famine Commissioners meeting at Delphi Lodge. Help was refused, and many died in the snow on the return march.
