CHAPTER NINE

“Man, I’m so glad lil Zay is okay,” Elijah said, rubbing his face as he sat on the living room sofa.

“Me too,” Raven said as she tidied up the area and put things back where they belonged. “That’s one less thing on his plate, and yours too.”

“Right. I’ve been so stressed out. My mind couldn’t focus on much. Now, we gotta find this nigga who owns the club and—”

“Before we get into that,” Raven said as she sat next to Elijah. “I want to talk about something else. I’ve been putting it off because things kept happening, and those things were more important than this matter. But it has to be addressed because it keeps coming back up, and I just gotta know.”

“What is it?” Elijah asked.

“What’s up with ole girl from the hospital?” Raven asked, looking Elijah directly in his eyes.

When he couldn’t maintain eye contact, her heart dropped into her stomach. He didn’t respond immediately, and her pulse quickened. Instead of answering right away, Elijah was searching for the perfect response to her question.

Simultaneously, he was practicing each answer in his mind, and they all led back to Raven being hurt and heartbroken by the actions he’d taken when they were separated. There was nothing he could say that would ease that pain.

He didn’t want to cause more.

From the look in her eyes at that moment, he knew the truth was going to crush her. Would she think of him as a typical nigga if he told the truth and told her that he and Kira had been intimate? Would she be more forgiving, knowing that the situation with Kira happened while they were separated? Would that even matter to her? Would she consider leaving him?

“Are you going to say something?” Raven asked, visibly upset.

Elijah rubbed his face and further avoided eye contact with her. Raven stood to her feet and looked down at him. She had to stop herself from reaching down and slapping the shit out of her husband.

“Did you fuck her?” she asked, knowing damn well he did.

Raven didn’t even know why she was asking questions that she already knew the answers to. But a part of her hoped it wasn’t true, and that particular part of her was in denial. She hoped there was a good reason that Kira kept popping up, but she knew there wasn’t one.

“Sit down, Raven,” Elijah instructed as he patted the seat next to him.

Now, he made eye contact as his eyes pleaded with her to calm down. Instead of sitting, she put her hands on her hips and waited for a response.

“If you’ve
