For parents adopting older children, the following suggestions may be helpful in making the transition:

Be ready for some communication difficulties. If there is a person in the community who speaks the language of the child, arrange for that person to be in your home for extended periods of time in the early weeks following the child’s arrival. Ask permission to solicit help in times of distress, even in the late hours of the evening.

Accept the child’s non-Americanized mannerisms and lifestyle. Eventually the child will adopt American ways. It is not necessary to push him.

Be aware of talking down to a child. Often when children are struggling with the language barrier, parents may treat them as far younger than their age. Or they may speak very loudly, as though the child cannot hear well.

Learn some significant customs from the child’s country. For example, some countries celebrate birthdays differently from what is common in the United States. This kind of celebration would be an excellent place to start.[6]
