CHAPTER TEN

I sat up tall on my yoga mat with my legs stretched in front of me and then leaned forward and wrapped my hands around my feet. The door to my studio was closed and medium-tempo music played as I did my post-class stretch.

This relaxing break at the end of the day was something I usually enjoyed. Slow soothing music replaced the upbeat Zumba tunes and taking this time was supposed to relax me. Fat chance today. Sadly, my mind was currently consumed with thoughts of Steve, and the bet, and Mel’s wedding, my upcoming birthday and that kiss.

How had I gotten myself into this mess?

A knock on my studio door jarred me from my thoughts. Probably Cheyenne, who had left her street shoes in the cubby by the door, which I noticed once the room had cleared out. Pushing Steve from my mind, I sprang from the floor, did a little bounce to shake out my muscles, and then strode across the room to pull the door open.

The person on the other side of the door was so not Cheyenne.

Instead, I stared into the chiseled face of Cal Miller, the non-prince who had left me with one shoe on that fateful birthday two years ago after he showed up late without so much as a text ahead of time. He had skillfully avoided me ever since that night despite being Steve’s best friend. What was he doing here now?

“Um . . . hi,” I said, my eyebrows coming together as I made no attempt to hide my shock at seeing him. My name and the title of my class was posted right on the door. There was no possible way he’d shown up here by accident.

“Hi, Kennedy,” he said flashing me a grin. He still filled out a suit and tie like nobody’s business, but I felt nothing but surprise as I stared at him. Sure, he could have gone with a little less hair gel as the studio lights were reflecting off the perfectly styled blond strands. But, admittedly, he looked hot. “How are you?” he asked.

“I’m good,” I said, wondering what in the world he was doing here.

“Great. That’s great. I’m great, too. I mean, you didn’t ask, but I’m great,” he said, his rambling response showing the awkwardness that was so very real.

“May I help you with something?” I asked, lifting an eyebrow.

“Yeah, actually,” he replied, raking a hand through his hair which seemed to crunch a little under the pressure. Way too much gel. “Have you seen, uh, Steve around? I was supposed to pick him up but he’s not in the gym or the locker room.”

“Oh,” I said, wishing I didn’t know Steve’s every move at the gym so well because it just made me feel pathetic. “Did you check the basketball courts? He uses the courts to run sprints at the end of the day with his clients.”

“No, I didn’t check there,” he said, not seeming overly interested in my answer. “Thanks for the tip.
