When Lady Osborne called at Delham Hall, she found her sister recumbent on a sofa by the fire, her ankle resting on a cushion. Elizabeth explained that Tom had gone into Delham on horseback and was not expected back until three.
âHe is gone to see the blacksmith about a spare wheel, or something of the kind. He would not commission another soul with the errand and insisted on doing everything himself. Anne has taken the old carriage. She is gone to visit the Forbesâ girls at Lowford, and begs your forgiveness. The engagement was of long-standing. It seems there is a rather fine collection of exotic birds in the long gallery there. Dead ones, of course. Stuffed. I have never seen the attraction of such things myself. Quite apt for Lowford Park. I spent such a dreary time of it on our last visit. Tom had no care, for he was deep in conversation with Lowford about a curricle he had just purchased from a new maker in town. Take me home before I die of boredom, said I, when Lowford was out of earshot. One hour and five and forty minutes later we were still there.â
âDear Elizabeth,â said Lady Osborne, âis there anything I can do to ease your present discomfort? A poultice for the pain?â
âThank you, dear sister, I have all I need,â she replied. âBut, now I think of it, there is something. Would you ask Osborne to persuade Tom to dispose of the contraption?â
Lady Osborne smiled. âDispose of the curricle?â
âI have no notion why Tom purchased it in the first place. And I shanât have a minuteâs peace until it is gone. It is quite unsteady. One can hardly get in or out of it. It caused me to sprain my ankle, you know. And my knee is just as badly affected.â
âTom said you had sprained your ankle learning to waltz.â
Elizabeth sighed. âNo indeed. That is what he would have you believe,â said she. âI have become rather partial to the waltz. And now it will be some weeks before I have the opportunity of dancing it again! But that curricle! Every time I think of it ââ
âHave no worry on that score,â replied Lady Osborne, unable to suppress a smile. âI am sure a way will be found to relieve you of the curricle before long.â
