Chapter Eighteen

The wives of the Council had not stopped their gossiping since coming together in the morning. Amelia wondered if they discussed anything other than the rumors pertaining to their peers.

Although she smiled and nodded from time to time, her mind was elsewhere. Oh, she was thinking about gossip but more specifically about that which was written in Lady Honor’s column.

The clipping Michael had shown her spoke of them, of that she had no doubt. But who was the mysterious author? And how had she learned anything about Amelia?

What had taken place in Manchester occurred over a month ago. That was more than enough time for the rumor to spread. One rumor from which Amelia could not recover. And all because of Georgina and her promiscuous ways. Yet, like everything else in her stepsister’s life, she bore no repercussions for her actions. By using Amelia’s name as her own, the princess was able to walk away unharmed from the trouble she had caused.

But Amelia had been given a strange and wonderful gift despite her ruined name. A means by which to get to Paris and begin her life anew.

The problem was that during her time with the viscount, Amelia found herself hoping he would allow her to remain with him. Their shared morning, although short, had been pleasant. She somehow missed how he had looked at her through those lidded eyes. It was wonderful to feel so appreciated.

“Forgive my interruption, ladies,” a man’s voice said.

Amelia turned to find Lord Calbright standing in the doorway. What had brought him to the drawing room? Had he lost his way? It was certainly easy in such a large place.

“I’ve been asked to inform you that the Council will be sharing in a working lunch.” His gaze fell on Amelia. “My cousin suggested that Lady Trentworth and I share our meal outside so we can get better acquainted. After all, you’re now my cousin as much as he is. Shall we meet in the garden?”

Amelia stared at him in confusion. Michael had little love for his cousin, so why would he suggest they spend time together? In fact, at the inn, he had instructed her to keep her distance from the gentleman. If she were to join the baron for luncheon, would that not upset her husband? Yet refusing him would make matters worse. Especially in front of the other wives.

As the others rose from their chairs, Lady Wayland approached, two dark curls on either side of her pretty face. “It appears your cousin is quite fond of you.”

Amelia stood. “If you mean he’s curious to learn more about me, then I agree.”

Lady Wayland watched as the other ladies withdrew before continuing. “What I mean is that you should take care. He wants to know you in ways a married woman should reserve for her husband.”

“I would never entertain such ideas,” Amelia said, taken aback.

The baroness flashed her a knowing smile and left the room. The lady had become even more opinionated about Amelia’s life over the past days, including commenting on her attire and now with whom she spent her time.
