We spend another day with Coraâwho is satisfied weâve worked things outâbefore we hit the road. I wish we could stay longer. I donât see Cora as often as I want, but I have to be back in LA in a few days.
Iâm not ready for this trip to be over. Not when Ash is right next to me. When I can touch her and taste her and fuck her anytime she wants me to. Thatâs going to be harder back home, impossible once my schedule picks up.
My hand is resting loosely on the stick shift, and Ashleyâs hand slips over the top of mine. She smiles at me but turns back to the road like she wants to touch me without turning it into more.
I spread my fingers to capture hers. âTell me something about you that would surprise me.â
Ash presses her lips together as she thinks. Then she smiles at me. âWendy, from Love on the Line, is my friend.â
âNo shit.â I canât keep the surprise out of my voice. Iâve never watched the show, but David filled me in. Ashleyâs fight with Wendy was one of the biggest blowouts of the season. According to him, it cemented her as the villain.
âShe needed to leaveâa personal reason Iâm not telling youâbut she couldnât tell the producers or she wouldnât have a shot at coming back in a later season. We planned the whole betrayal thing. Luca was easy to manipulate into sending her home.â
âSo you became the villain of the season to give her an out?â
Ashley laughs and shakes her head. âNo, they cast me as the villain when I walked in the door and told them I was there to win, whatever the cost. It just forced me to out myself sooner than I planned.â
âSo you didnât get the villain edit?â
She wrinkles her nose. âIt wasnât much of an edit.â Sheâs quiet for a moment, lost in her thoughts, her thumb sliding along the side of my hand, back and forth. âHonestly, I would have edited the show the same. The storyline was perfectâmy rise, my fall. Poppy could have been the villain of the season, but it wouldnât have been as exciting. She was impulsive and bombastic, rather than calculating. The only thing Iâd have done differently, if it was my show, would be to make the villain relatable at the end. They didnât even try.â She smiles at me, and itâs a rueful sort of smile. âMaybe it wasnât possible to give the things I did on that show a sympathetic bent.â
I donât want her to dwell on what she did for that show, however scripted or edited it was. Or wasnât. âHow did you and Wendy become friends?â
Ash smiles and this time itâs warm. âThe first night at the meet and greet, I was sizing up the competition when she started talking to me. I thought either sheâs foolish or way smarter than anyone is giving her credit for. And after thatâ¦I donât know.
