Chapter 7

Wanderers

As autumn progressed, Leif established a small stall between the rows of vendors in Shangcheng market. Customers would stop by the stall, admiring the exquisite craftsmanship, and often lingered to share stories and laughter. It certainly helped that the economy was flourishing all over the empire. With every sale and hard-earned deal, his creations slowly found their way into the homes and hearts of the townsfolk.

In between her time managing the estate, Mei also spent some days in Shangcheng, furnishing her new cottage with items that complemented the rustic charm of the wooden walls and the simple elegance of the hearth.

In this bustling town, their identities remained cloaked, allowing them the rare pleasure of anonymity. Despite the demands of the new entrepreneurial venture, they found themselves stealing moments in town and in the secluded corners of their home, a stolen touch here, a passionate fondle there, their fervent desires manifesting in fleeting yet intense moments that punctuated the hectic pace of their daily lives.

While Mei carried on with her duties in Qingyun, Leif would divide his time between the village and the small house, his days a whirlwind of activity as he tirelessly forged connections and cultivated their budding venture.

One of his latest ideas involved pitching custom creations for wealthy patrons. When an aide to a powerful county official passed by his stall and requested a set of unique necklaces for each of his master's multiple wives and concubines, he took up the offer immediately.

He was excited to share the news with Mei as he arrived back at the village that evening. Instead, the usual buzz of activity seemed oddly subdued. A hushed tension hung in the air, prompting him to quicken his pace toward Lingxi Manor.

He was met with Mei looking visibly distraught, her countenance drained of color, like she’d just seen a ghost.

"What happened, Mei?"

She led him to the back of the manor, to the humble shack where he used to stay. Inside, an unconscious man was bound to a chair.

Leif peered through the window and into the shadows, his breath hitching as recognition dawned on him. The man tied up before them was tall, with wavy auburn hair and beard, and wounds and bruises all over him.

He was clad in fierce armor which bore the unmistakable markings of a fellow Norseman. He was also someone Leif had known back in Nordvik.

Leif's heart skipped a beat. Another wanderer from their distant homeland, a warrior forged in the same crucible as himself, had unexpectedly appeared in this quaint sanctuary.
