Chapter Thirty

Finding out that vampiric bitch Jamie is part of The Rising changed things. For the last two days, Ledger’s been scouring the minds of professors trying to discern how many more there are and if anyone at all can be trusted, and I don’t like what he’s been finding out. People I once respected like Professor Blanch from Poisonous Plants and Professor Liu from Magic Replenishment are apparently no longer worthy of it, while the ones I never thought twice about like Professor Walters from Magic History and Professor Vasquez from Intro to Magic are the ones I should’ve trusted. What does it say about me that I gravitated toward evil?

The only solace I take is that I knew Caius and Vinter were bastards the moment I met them. We’d already been warned about them, but Ledge barely got the words out of his mouth to confirm it before I was rolling my eyes and telling him I called it. It wasn’t that much of a leap. When you head up Magic Discovery and your sole purpose at this school is terrorizing potential humans, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out you really don’t care about them.

Right now, my biggest concern is Professor Calhoun. I’m about to walk into my Elemental magic class and this guy is already suspicious of me as it is, but now that Ledger discovered his little secret, his side-eyes and scrutiny have become a little more ominous. I can’t help but wonder how much he knows. Given the little gift I received in my bed, The Rising is onto me — but are they all aware, or was that something private between Cherith and Jamie?

It fucking kills me that I can’t read minds the way my mate can.

The atmosphere in the class is razor-sharp as I step in, which I expected just a couple of days before a total eclipse. Everyone’s on edge more than normal, and I saw three fights break out in the catacombs just on my way here. If it’s this bad already, I think the day of the eclipse is going to be a bloodbath.

“Hey,” I whisper to Ollie. “How are you holding up?”

She flips her long blonde hair over her shoulder as she shrugs. “About as well as everyone else, I guess. Things with me and Kate are good, but we’ve agreed to stay away from each other for the next few days just in case. It kinda sucks.”

I bet it does. I can’t imagine being away from Ledger, even during a time like this. “Are you really that afraid? Peryton are docile, aren’t they?”

“Most of the time, yeah. But eclipses change people.”

I’ve only met a handful of peryton before — Kate and her twin sister Carly, Hunter, and a guy named Lawrence Tate from my first Intro to Mythics class — but they’ve all seemed like quiet little teddy bears. I can’t imagine any of them going all bloodthirsty killer on the ones they love. “I’m sorry you guys have to be apart, but hopefully the eclipse will end quickly and you guys can move forward.
