‘Like mother like daughter…’ Satan purred, smiling knowingly as Eden strained for the emerald bracelet that her grandmother was rolling across the floor in front of her, just out of reach. ‘And yes Eden, you’re right- this would bring out your glorious green eyes...’ she rolled it in reverse and Eden shrieked in delight, kicking her legs like she could swim to the bracelet across my fluffy fur rug. ‘So much so that I might just have to make you a little tiara to match…’

‘I am not like that anymore,’ I protested, but I was smiling despite myself. Mother had come for her first scheduled (but supervised) visit with Eden, and though I’d been incredibly anxious about it since I’d first put the offer on the table the week before, it was going surprisingly well, all things considered. Yes, Satan was already trying to bribe her with gifts, but Constance had been trying to get a tiara onto Eden’s head since the day she’d been born, so I had cause to hope that it was just something that ridiculously wealthy and eccentric grandmothers did, rather than some sign that my mother was trying to tempt my daughter over to the dark side already. ‘And I can’t even get a knitted cap to sit on her head, so if you think you can get a tiara to stay put, go for it...’

‘You are definitely still like that,’ Martya contradicted me. She was sitting closer to mother than any of us, which proved just how comfortable she was with her compared to others like Sam, who’d declared that he would be spending the day locked up in his treehouse instead and the Trevasse family, who’d vowed to stay in Fitzhugh Valley all day. ‘You may not covet jewels the way you used to now that you have so many of them, but if there’s ever an option, you always still opt to wear or surround yourself with things that sparkle.’

‘Or glow…’ my father chimed in. ‘Or shimmer-’

‘Okay fine, so I’m still drawn to things that attract the light,’ I conceded, releasing my knees so I could hold my palms up in surrender. I was on the ground just as Martya, mother and Eden were, but I’d opted to sit back a ways with my back resting against the base of my rounded bed behind Eden, so that my presence wouldn’t be too distracting for the baby who was very much a mama’s girl whenever mama- and the large breasts that I was slowly trying to wean her off- were within sight. ‘But I’m not so obsessed with them that I’d wear an evening gown to lunch, which means that I’m not even the worst person in this room for it.’

‘You wish you could pull off an evening gown in the middle of the day,’ my mother teased me, smoothing the glittering black material of her dress over her ample hip and smiling that devilish smile
