That night, Scott and Holly met at one of Mill Valleyâs most popular restaurants, Bungalow 44, for dinner.
Scott walked in just a few minutes after Holly arrived. After kissing her cheek, he exclaimed, âI love coming here. Itâs got such a great vibe.â
Although it was just past seven, the restaurant was already buzzing at its usual busy pace. Patrons, standing two deep at the bar, pressed in closer as the hostess walked past with guests heading for one of the few remaining open tables.
After the two kissed quickly for a second time, Scott pulled back, took both of Hollyâs hands and looked at her and smiled.
As demurely as she could, Holly asked, âDid you have an interesting day?â
âNot so much interesting as intense,â Scott said.
âI tried to call you.â
âI got your message, but when youâre in finals week, you have zero time for yourself. I spent my day jumping from one classroom to the next. On top of it all, I have all these nervous students wondering how theyâre doing. This whole âmake it into the best college or elseâ pressure that kids are under nowadays keeps getting nuttier with each passing year. Between students on edge, and faculty and staff trying to put out fires all day, things get pretty intense. On the upside, the day goes by in a hurry.â
âAnd then on top of all that, there is the elephant in the room.â
âWhat elephant?â
âYouâre kidding, right? Didnât you hear from Bob Ivan?â
Scott shook his head. âI saw I had two missed calls from his number, but we never did connect. I should have tried him while I was driving down here from San Rafael. Do you know whatâs up?â
âThe test on your aunt came back,â Holly said, more than a bit surprised that she would be the one to break this important news.
âSo, itâs official?â Scott said in a rush.
âI should have said the test results from your mother are back,â Holly nodded and smiled.
Scott let loose with a low whistle. âWow! I guess neither of us should be too surprised, given what we learned from Mikhail and Jeannie.â
âYouâre right. Shocking at this point would have been finding out Henrietta wasnât your mother.â Holly pulled Scott closer so that he could hear her above the din. âBut thereâs even bigger news.â
âWhat?â Scott asked, his voice also raised.
âBob Ivan told Eddie, when they ran into each other this morning at the courthouse, that you were not named in Henriettaâs will! No mention at all.â
âYikes!â he exclaimed.
Holly had long heard the expression that there are more important things in life than money, but she wasnât sure if she had ever met someone who truly embodied that sentiment more than Scott.
If it had been me, and I found out that I was in line to claim the value of the entire Hammer estate, Iâd be bouncing off the ceiling, Holly thought.
But Scott was silent, apparently lost in thought. Finally, he grabbed Hollyâs hand and said, âLetâs get out of here and talk where we can hear each other.
