TOM GOT UP BEFORE ANY of us and had the coffee going. When I went down the stairs, I saw him standing in the front window, with his mug and watching the snow fall. It was still dark because the days were so short now.
The smell of the coffee greeted me. It was strong. Everyone in Foleyâs Rest made strong coffee.
I tiptoed to the bathroom so he wouldnât see my bedhead. I used to stay in my P.J.âs until after breakfast, but this week, I might shower before. So, after I looked presentable but still had wet hair, I came out and headed for the coffee pot.
âMorning,â he said.
âHi.â I poured some and added my sugar and cream.
Tomâs eyes lingered over me and no one else was up yet. With everything quiet and still dark, my heart started to beat faster. After I fixed it just right, I glanced up and met his gaze.
He wore thick corduroy pants, a T-shirt, and a flannel shirt, which all matched. His eyes were so deep and dark.
I walked toward him. Not that I meant to or planned to, but it was a magnetic force. Why was I still attracted to this guy? I never knew a guy this masculine. Was that the word? Notably, he was in control, always perfectly in control. He is quiet, but everything he says carries weight. He is kind and loving, but you have to respect him. In essence, I couldnât step over him, and I couldnât control him. Because he would never allow it.
âSo, does anyone send greetings to me?â I finally asked.
âI didnât tell them you were here.â
That was strange. Why not?
âI just really want to thank you for being here for everyone,â he said.
âYouâre welcome.â
I wanted to ask about the compass, but maybe Tom would be upset at Margaret for telling me, so I didnât.
âYouâve done a marvellous job here,â he said.
âThanks.â
I ran out of things to say, and perhaps he did too.
He couldâve asked me out. And if he wanted to, he would have.
Soon Margaret got up, and before I knew it, the day was in full swing.
âI donât have anything to wear,â Kimberly called out.
This was her new fixation. She never had anything to wear.
âIâll give you something to wear,â I yelled back, and she screeched and ran into her room and shut the door as I chased after her. Because I finally found that the only way to deal with it was to make up these ridiculous outfits. âHey, let me in. I have the greatest idea.â
âNo thanks. Iâm fine and I remembered what I was going to wear,â she called back.
âBut I have the best idea. You like hats, right? And socks too. You will be the talk of all the boys.â
âNo thanks.â
âYou have no idea of the terrific outfit I have in mind.â
âNo, thanks.â
The phone rang, and Margaret answered it, so I took over stirring the porridge and then started making smoothies. The kids loved them, and I just packed them with fruit.
