CHAPTER FOUR
Ramiro de Maeztu and the Search for a
Hispanic Economic Ideology
In Defensa de la Hispanidad, published in 1934, Maeztu marked the eighteenth century as the moment when Spaniards betrayed their essence by trying to imitate other nations. He was not the first to voice such a conviction. As seen in chapter 1, even the liberal José del Perojo in 1885 associated the loss of the Spanish colonial tradition with the reforms proposed by the Spanish librecambistas in the mid-eighteenth century. Traditionalists viewed the liberal shift of this period as the germ of disbelief and materialism and regarded the economic ideals of the classical school as selfish, interested tenets that did not correspond with the Spanish spirit.
A former champion of economic liberalism, by the 1930s Maeztu was constrained by the conceptual limitations of la Hispanidad, whose tendency to exalt Spanish tradition prior the eighteenth century seemed quite irreconcilable with economic modernity. Along with other writers of la Hispanidad, Maeztu participated in the promotion of a traditionalist and Catholic model for Spanish-speaking nations, yet I argue here that underneath his Defensa lay a connection to his former Hispanist production that sets his work apart from other representative texts of la Hispanidad. My goal in this chapter is to show Maeztuâs constant dialogue with these tensions between capitalism and Hispanic identity over the course of his career, tensions that constitute the thematic thread of this book and that particularly framed Maeztuâs production.
