Marco insisted his mate needed rest after the incident in the library of the mansion. A patrol of the grounds resulted in absolutely nothing, which was proving to be the way with everything at the moment. The more they searched, the less they found. He led her by hand, up the stairs to their room and ran a bath in the large tub in the en suite. She asserted she could bathe herself perfectly well when he stripped and climbed into the steaming hot water behind her, but she still shuffled back and situated herself between his legs. She leaned back against his chest with a dreamy sigh and laid her head on his chest.

“When I think of his hands on you.” Marco smoothed a hand along her arm as he spoke, his voice gravelly and hard. Their conversations about Eldon had been brief, her memories still warped, but the knowledge the vampire had taken her without consent was enough to keep Marco in a constant state of fury. “I want to kill him and every man who ever touched you.”

“You’re the only man who has ever touched me,” she smiled into the words. “I refused Axel and the only other was a vampire, not a man.”

“I don’t understand how you can be so calm about it.”

“Calm? Is that what I’ve been?” she joked and they both laughed. “Memories of the time I spent with him are hazy. I remembered Benton on sight, I think it may have been because of the warrior bond. I only know what Eldon did to me because Benton told me. Sometimes, there are feelings, thoughts, not visions. If I never regain that part then the compulsion blessed me with something good.”

“Do you recall your escape at all?”

“Some. I remember running for days in animal form. I think I was on a ship. The motion of the waves sticks with me. That’s the only explanation I can find for ending up in England, where Veronica found me.”

She fell silent on the mention of that name, not wanting to taint their time with her darker thoughts. Moments like these weren’t something either of them were used to. Both were content to simply sit in each other’s space, enjoying the connection of their skin while they drank vodka from the mini fridge in the room.

“What’s happening with our bond, Marco?” she asked after a while.

“I don’t know,” he admitted with a sigh. He leaned over and set his glass down on the floor beside the tub.

“I can’t always feel you.”

“I know, it’s the same for me.”

“And why can’t we heal each other properly? I watched Jax heal Aurora on that helicopter, he made it look easy.”

“We’re not like them,” Marco said.

“You keep saying that, but this isn’t about them and us, is it? This is about a mate bond that should be stronger than it is.”

“I’ll find the answers, Smokey. I’ll fix it.” Melaina tilted her head to the side exposing her neck, a move his wolf could not resist.
