CHAPTER 14
Tim sat in his office looking at a picture on his desk, Tim, Mary and Middy. Tim thought back over his life since he had heard that knock on the Motel 6 door seven years ago. What a change, the people he had encountered and the challenges he had overcome. He was so very thankful for his life and the opportunities given to him. His thoughts went back to Miss Adaline, Aunt Jane, Spencer Jones, Mildred Buckner, Sam South and the investors in the original WEPAC operation.
Then he remembered David, Maryâs adopted brother, as she called him. He had the greatest impact on their lives, and it was all negative. Tim thought how it affected Mary and wondered if she would ever, truly get over what had happened. She seemed fine now and in fact, never mentioned David. He knew, however, that she did visit his grave and leave flowers on many occasions.
His thoughts went to Middy, their little angel. She was so smart and so very kind and loving. It was her voice now that was so amazing. They had bought her a small guitar for Christmas as she had requested. She learned a few chords and sang most evenings in her room. She didnât like to sing for others, but would sing for Tim and Mary. Her little voice was angelic. It had to come from her mother. Tim could still see Spencerâs face as he said, âI will miss her voice the most. She sings to me most nights.â He was talking about Middyâs mother, Jane Jones.
Should they tell her about her mother? They had not discussed this in the last two or three years. It worried Tim that she might find out from someone else and then, they would have to confirm the truth. But the worst part would be to answer her obvious question of why they had not told her. He would bring up the subject with Mary, soon. They really should tell her before much longer.
It was Maryâs week for the carpool. She was waiting outside the school for Middy and her friends. It was Friday and she was looking forward to the week end. The three were planning a trip to Nashville and stay at the Opryland Hotel. It would be fun. There were two other girls in the carpool, Sandy, who was eight and Patty who was Middyâs age and her best friend. The three of them had many sleepovers and spent a lot of time together. Mary was surprised when Middy asked if she could spend the week-end with Patty and not go to Nashville with her and Tim.
âHoney, letâs talk with daddy tonight and then you can call Patty and let her know.â
Middy wasnât happy with her answer, but agreed to wait.
Tim was as surprised as Mary.
âMiddy, we have been planning our trip for a long time. Is there some reason why you donât want to go with mommy and me?â
Middy smiled and looked at each of them.
âWell, I thought you two might like to be alone.
