Chapter 15

Rowena's first thought when she woke an hour later was that she envied Trevor for having such a lovely bed. It would be so nice to lay in it for the rest of the day, but she was never one to engage in such decadence. There were always too many things to do. When she lived with Claire and John, she had so many chores that she did every day that she would collapse onto her cot from sheer exhaustion. Claire and John were already old when she came to stay with them. In the fourteen years she lived in the cottage, as she watched their strength wane with age, she took over most of the tasks of maintaining their cottage and gardens. There was never time for being lazy.

Eventually her body reminded her that she needed to get up and take care of her needs. So with a last sigh and a rub of her hand over the clean sheet under her, she dragged herself to the bathing room. She had dropped her clothes on the floor earlier and now noticed that they were no longer where she had dropped them. The tub had also been emptied and cleaned. She apparently was more tired than she had thought. She slept right through someone else’s presence in the bedroom.

When she walked back into the bedroom, she saw that the fire had been stoked as well. The chilliness from that morning was replaced with comfortable warmth. The food tray was gone from the table, and a leather satchel replaced it. As she thought of the missing tray, Rowena realized that her appetite had returned in force. She hoped the next tray, which she assumed would be coming soon, would hold something more substantial than broth and bread. If everyone thought that she was ill, she would have to listen for someone entering the study and head back to bed to continue her ruse.

Megan must have brought her the bag. As she wondered what was inside the bag, she went to the table and untied the flap. The first thing she pulled out was another clean shirt. Following this was a clean plaid and stockings. A smaller drawstring bag at the bottom of the larger bag caught her attention. She pulled it out and wondered what was in it. Whatever it was, it was soft. She opened the drawstring and reached inside. When her hand encountered the contents, she cried out in fear. Quickly she pulled the drawstring open wider and dumped the contents onto the table. Her worse fear had come true.

Her eyes began to water when she looked at the table. Sitting on top was female padding.

Megan MacKenzie knew!

Rowena had to leave! She had to go now before anyone came for her. If she remained, then she would be a prisoner in the jail by nightfall. She would be held in chains until Trevor returned to mete out a sentence that was sure to include returning her to her uncle.
