I couldn’t help wondering if we could, in fact, have caught our own food, and Ares had used the idea of asking Hippolyta for help as an excuse to teach me about my war power.

That was what I wanted to believe, at least. We could have tried to contact Zeeva for food, and there was plenty of stuff scurrying about that must have been edible. Asking the Queen of the Amazons for some dinner seemed excessive. He’d refused to teach me anything so many times that it would be hard for him to suddenly backtrack, and I couldn’t shift the feeling that something was different since he had nearly drowned. He wasn’t using as much of my power either. He could have taken it and spoken to his daughter himself. So why had he got me to do it?

Ares had prepared the animal, and we sat in silence as it turned on a makeshift spit over the little fire.

“Should we sleep here?” I asked him eventually, the quiet too much for me to bear for long.

“I suppose it is as good a place as any, if we must sleep.”

“Would carrying on through the night be better? Are dragons any different in the dark?”

He looked up at me, but I couldn’t identify his expression. “Take your helmet off,” I said softly. He hesitated. “The world has seen your face already.”

Slowly, he pulled his helmet off, standing it on the earth beside him with exaggerated care.

“I’ve seen you quite literally throw that thing at the floor. Why the tenderness now?”

“It’s symbolic,” he muttered. Firelight flickered across his beautiful face, reflecting in his eyes and softening the hard line of his jaw. He pushed his hair back from his forehead, and I realized I was biting my bottom lip. “Dragons are the same in the dark,” he said, and turned the spit with our dinner on it.

“Oh. Do they look like dragons from my world?”

“I have no idea.”

“Big scaly things with wings that breath fire?”

“They are large and have scales. They are like winged snakes, with horns.”

“Sounds similar,” I said.

“They do not breath fire though.”

“Oh, good.”

“Some are made of fire.”

“What?”

“Others from water, but most from muscle. They are very clever. They will try to trick you into doing their bidding, and play games with your mind.”

“Right. I can’t wait to see which type we get,” I breathed.
