Chapter 10
Ryan
This was officially the lowest point of my life.
Sequins.
I was wearing freakinâ sequins.
The horror must have been written all over my face because Rosie slipped her hand into mine, her expression solemn. âDo you need to borrow Bubblegum?â
She pointed to the pink bunny that was peeking out of her little backpack in the corner.
âThanks, but not even Bubblegum can fix this situation.â
Rosie nodded, like she knew what I was talking about.
She didnât. She couldnât.
All tacky sequined spandex aside, this outfit was actually the least of my problems.
âYouâre nervous,â she said.
I gave her a little smile. âSomething like that.â
âDonât be, youâre going to do great.â Her wide-eyed confidence in me was sweet, if not exactly heartening.
I wasnât actually nervous about this dumb pageant. Why would I be? Bianca was doing all the real work. All the guys had to do was show up and look stupid, answer a few questions and strut around like peacocks. Bianca was the one who was going to be dancingâon her injured ankle, which was the height of insanity.
I mean, I understood that she wanted to win. But she clearly didnât need the money that badly that she needed to risk her entire dance career to get it.
Iâd tried to tell her that after ballet class on Monday when sheâd pulled me aside to go over the pageantâs agenda.
She hadnât let me finish. Sheâd barely let me speak at all. But that wasnât the worst part. The worst part was, she hadnât looked at me. All during class, and after when we were alone, her eyes had this glazed look like she was barely even there. No glares, no scowls, no huffs of impatience when I didnât get to the barre fast enough for warm-ups.
Nothing that had been the pillar of our relationship from the start. Things were different between us and I wasnât sure I was ready to accept that difference. I wanted to go back to the way things used to be. Iâd had enough change in my life to last me forever. The last thing I wanted was for something to be different between me and Bianca.
When I tried to tell her she shouldnât dance at the pageant if the academyâs doctors hadnât even cleared her for ballet classes yet, sheâd just continued talking like she hadnât heard me.
She didnât get all pissy and tell me to mind my own business, and thatâ¦
That was the real reason I was so on edge right now. But it wasnât like I could explain all that to Rosie, not when she kept talking about Bianca like she was some fairytale princess come to life.
Rosie finally had a role model. An older female sister figure she could look up to, and there was no way Iâd do anything to take that away from her.
Bianca had let Rosie come along to the pageant dress rehearsal with her. I hadnât been able to go because of football and Bianca put Rosie in charge of taking notes.
Rosie had taken her job very seriously.
