Kitty’s breath failed to escape as they drove alongside a large lake bathed in beauty. Bert, ever the tour guide, updated her on where they were on the map he’d given her.

‘It’s called Loch Lomond. You’re lucky it’s not raining and misty. It never seems to stop raining here, so it’s your lucky day, as I said. Take it all in as another time you might not get a clear view.’

Another gasp came from Kitty when they pulled up at the entrance of Buchanan Castle to show their passes. A magnificent building with tall round turrets, it reminded her of fairy-tale stories from her childhood. The grounds were busy with army personnel going about their business, and it made Kitty smile when they all turned to peer into the impressive staff car for a better view of whichever VIP was paying them a visit.

‘Good enough for you, madam?’ Bert asked.

‘It will do, Bert. It will do,’ Kitty said, eventually releasing the breath she’d held.

Unloading her bag and shaking his hand, Kitty’s nerves suddenly kicked into play and she took a moment to compose herself.

‘Just breathe and be yourself. You’ll be fine. I hope our paths cross again one day, Kitty. You’ve been the model passenger and companion,’ Bert said, and saluted her before walking away.

‘Thanks, Bert. Take care,’ Kitty called out to him, and he gave her a wave in reply.
