Chapter Thirteen

TAZ

Noah was career driven, and he loved women that were career driven as well. I could appreciate that tremendously. I was serious about my craft and was always looking for something to set me apart. The whole polyharmony thing that happened was by sheer accident. It came out one day, and I didn’t know how it happened. My doctor said my vocal cords moved quickly whenever it happened, and he couldn’t explain it either. I accepted it as a gift from God and moved on.

What slightly bothered me about Noah’s “gift” was that I knew that was what defined his past relationships. He kept putting Sonya in his videos, catapulting both their careers. Then he made Jah his manager, which only took them both to the next level. I didn’t want to just be the next charity case. Not that either of those women were charity cases, but he was no longer with either of them. I knew he noticed my hesitancy with his change of plans for his single.

As soon as everyone left, Noelle and I talked a bit about the song we were working harmonies for, then she went to bed. The moment she ascended the stairs, Noah was glued to me like we hadn’t seen one another in months. While he was career driven, I did notice that outside of that studio, he rarely talked about his career. It was like he kept Noah the artist separated from Noah the individual, son, uncle, brother, and father.

Maybe that was what got in the way in his marriage to Jah. She was definitely about her bag. I never really saw pictures of them outside of their careers; either it was a video shoot, studio footage, or tour videos and pictures. However, I didn’t want to be a repeat relationship. While I knew it seemed he’d had enough time to get over Jah, that may not have been the case. He had to still love her as the mother of his children. Plus, they were married for like thirteen years.

Kissing my cheek, he brought me out of my thoughts. “What’s on your mind, shorty? I can see the wheels turning fast as hell in your head.”

I turned to him and without hesitancy, I said, “I don’t think you should put our song together out first.”

He frowned slightly. He didn’t look angry, but he did look slightly confused. “I…” I paused, trying to find the right words. I didn’t want to offend him. “I just didn’t want our relationship to mirror your others. It’s like that’s your way of doing things. I get it, but I don’t want our relationship to end up like your previous ones. I’m career driven and so are you. I would hate for our careers to get in the way of our relationship before it can get started good.”

He sat back on the couch as I stared at him, waiting for what his response would be. He took a deep breath, and I could feel the slight irritation in it.
