Chapter Seven

Sunday morning was a repeat of Saturday, but Vee wasn’t freaking out this time. Pat guided the colt onto the track for their gallop. Vee went willingly, but the way he moved told Pat that he still wasn’t comfortable on the track. He didn’t like the surface at all. Pat hoped it wasn’t as obvious to the world as it was to him. He stroked Vee’s neck and spoke to him in a non-stop singsong, trying every trick he knew to relax the big colt. Vee’s ears flicked back to him, and the golden head turned enough that Vee could look at him.

“Relax, my boyo. Easy there. It’s not that bad; it’s just sand and dirt.”

I don’t like it, Vee said. I don’t like the way it feels on my hooves.

Pat clucked. “I know, but it’s one race. Just one. And then we go home.”

Home Farm?

“No, Belmont. The Big Sandy.” Pat pictured the track in his mind, as he recalled seeing it from the backs of numerous horses. He wondered if Vee would be able to pick up on the images.

Oh, that place. I like that one. When are we going there? Vee moved a little more aggressively as another horse came into view, tugging on the bit in his habitual request to be let loose.

“After the Preakness. In a week or so.” Pat eased Vee, telling him no with hand and body.

Good. Vee settled down, but Pat sensed that he was full of run, even after the two-and-a-half-mile gallop.

When they got to the barns, Brenden was waiting for them. The security team was there now, Pat noted. Brenden had decided they wouldn’t be needed at the training farm, for the seclusion made a mob attack unlikely. Pat had thought that was foolhardy, but Brenden was more stubborn than a spavined mule.

“He’s still chock full of energy,” Pat told him.

“Good,” said Brenden, smiling. “He’ll get a blow-out tomorrow then nothing but nice, easy gallops until race day. I was just showing our security team the layout.”

Pat nodded. “I’ll be walking him, then.”

Brenden nodded back.

Pat led Vee off, wondering what would happen next. Vee nuzzled his cheek and he smiled before kissing back, planting his lips on Vee’s soft, soft muzzle. Oh, if only we could defy Father. I miss you so much.

I want you, too, Pat, but it’s not worth the risk. Trust your sire. Vee blew softly against his skin.
