Should You Accept Insurance?

Educating yourself about the astonishingly intricate details of insurance is a grim necessity. In this chapter, we will examine running a business without taking insurance at all, i.e. offering your services on a “private pay” basis. We’ll explore how to go about getting accepted (“paneled”) by major insurance companies as a “preferred provider.” We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages to offering a “sliding scale” (reduced fees for clients who can’t afford your full fee).

Even if you have a front office person or outside contractor who deals with insurance, it’s still important that you have a working understanding of the insurance process. We hope this information shines a much-needed light on a subject many therapists avoid.
