Chapter Six

SAER

There was a skip in my step as I headed into the village. I had no idea why I was so happy. Who was I kidding? I knew. Something had changed between Bernd and I. It was hard for me to put a finger on it, but it had. The air around us felt… lighter. The kiss probably had a good deal to do with it. Even if nothing came of it, if we remained friends, I would be happy. Maybe we could spend some time together when we returned to the palace. Our adventures in the forest had inspired me, and I couldn’t wait to return to work.

As I walked down the cobblestone road, I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. I waved at a woman sweeping outside her door. She sniffed the air and narrowed her eyes at me. I guessed not many strangers ventured through the village, what with it being tucked away in the middle of enchanted woods hidden behind magic.

The village looked like any other, with cute little stone houses, their shutters painted pretty colors and flower boxes outside the windows. The sound of children laughing and playing floated through the air. I sniffed, and my stomach rumbled at the smell of freshly baked bread and pastries. Ooh, apple pie!

Was it me, or was everyone glaring at me? I discreetly looked down at myself. I wasn’t naked. I might enjoy walking around in the nude, but even I didn’t walk around a village without clothes. What were they so upset about? Had I done something wrong? The farther down the road I walked, the more villagers emerged, all of them watching me. Maybe I should wait for Bernd.

This was silly. I hadn’t done anything. With a smile, I walked up to the bakery and reached out to take hold of the door handle, but a huge man blocked my path.

He sneered down at me. “What are you doing here?”

Well, that was kind of rude. I blinked up at him. “Um, trying to buy some yummy baked goods? Excuse me.”

“You don’t belong here, mongrel.”

I gasped and stumbled back at the unexpected cruelty. Three more bear shifters stood, glaring at me. What was happening? “Please, I just wanted to buy some food. That’s all. I apologize if I’ve offended you in some way.”

“Your very presence offends,” one woman spat out. “Coyotes are nothing but filthy scavengers, feeding off the carcasses of someone else’s kill. You have no honor.”

I frowned at her. “That’s not true. Not all of us are like that.” And many who were couldn’t help it. The more humans encroached on our land, the harder it was for so many of my kind. We hadn’t always been despised. In some human cultures, we were even revered, prayed to by humans. Where was this anger coming from? “I don’t understand why you’re so angry.”

A large man took a step toward me. “We won’t let you steal from us.”

“Steal? I wasn’t going to steal.”

The man growled and made a swipe for me.
