ELEVEN

Just after the second song ended, Nathaniel and the other wedding attendants filed into the Timothy and Bailey Stoltzfoos’ home. The ceremony was already underway, and the congregation had begun the next song. Soon, the preaching would begin.

He allowed his eyes to briefly roam the interior of the house. He didn’t spot Amy nor Toby anywhere. Probably a gut thing. But it would be odd for the deacon’s dochder not to show up for the wedding of a well-known family in the community. Especially when she was the best friend of the sister of the bride.

After the ceremony ended, the guests all made their way out to the Miller farm, where the reception would be held. For his sister’s sake, Nathaniel had done his best to keep a chipper appearance throughout the day. He’d conversed with the other newehockers, and joined in the singing and the games, but his heart had weighed heavy the entire time.

The truth was, he’d been thinking of Amy and Toby’s upcoming wedding. He looked forward to Florida now more than ever. Tomorrow, he’d help with cleanup and setting things back in order. The next day, he’d be gone.

~

Amy heard the news through the grapevine. Nathaniel had left. He’d gone to Florida. No one knew when he planned to return. Or if.

Apparently, she’d received the answer she’d been praying for. Apparently, Nathaniel was not the one for her. Apparently, she’d be accepting Toby’s proposal and moving forward with wedding plans.

Why, then, did she feel rotten about it? Shouldn’t getting engaged and married feel like the most wunderbaar thing in the world? Shouldn’t she be ecstatic? She felt none of it.

Who was she to question God? After all, she’d prayed for a sign. Well, if Nathaniel’s leaving the state wasn’t a huge neon sign flashing in front of her nose, she didn’t know what was.

Toby had said to contact him when she was ready—when she’d prayed and made up her mind.
