Again from the frontiers of brain science, we are learning a lot about emotional contagion and its implications for the ways we communicate. There are some rather obvious things like the fact that emotional contagion is influenced by how much attention we pay to the situation at hand (and thus our receptivity to emotional cues) and that certain emotional expressions are more arresting than others. (Scream “Fire!” and you’ve got my attention.)13

However, what is not so obvious is the work that is being done on mimicry, or the automatic, subconscious ways in which we mirror the behavior of those around us.14We routinely mimic others’ facial expressions, body language, speech patterns, and vocal tones in social interaction, and only sometimes are we aware of it.15 The fact that mimicry effects have been found in newborns suggests that humans have an innate tendency to mimic.16 This certainly explains our inclination to yawn after someone else in our presence does. And it explains why the pop star Madonna, from Detroit, Michigan, suddenly adopted an English accent when she married a Brit and moved to England.
