I see you weaken already, my dear. Did you not insist that you would never send a note? It gives me hope for the future.

Of course Anna and Miss Weber are welcome to join us since the rain has changed our plans. They will provide an excellent distraction while we discuss The Plan. I shall call for you all at four.

When had she said that she would never write him a note? She thought back over their few meetings. At the balloon ascension. Oh, but her note today had not been suggestive. It had been direct and to the point, without a hint of romantic intrigue. She glanced again at her drawer. Not like his note. She could hear his teasing voice in the words. It gives me hope for the future.

“Mariel, if you keep staring off in such a thoughtful way, I will be convinced that the note was anything but conventional.”

“Is Hadley ever conventional?” Mariel did not need an answer to that and turned her full attention to her toilette. “It would be wiser to wear the deep green, would it not? Rain spots will not show. Besides, I am beginning to think this pink much too young for me.”

Christiana picked up the pink gown. “This is a wonderful color for you. And it is not a real pink at all. It is called ‘new love’ and is far more red than pink.” She held it up to the window. “See how the color deepens in the light?”

“‘New love’? Definitely the green, then.”

Even without Wheatley in the room, they made short work of dressing.

“Hadley invited you to the park at the ball last night?”

“Yes, only it was at Mrs. Harbison’s suggestion. He could hardly not offer the invitation without appearing churlish.”

Christiana patted her on the shoulder as she finished the last of the buttons. Mariel sat at her dressing table and watched Christiana from the mirror as she held the pink gown against her. She walked a few steps to the glass to see the effect.

“He is never churlish, Mariel, but Hadley can always find a way out if he does not want to do something. Do you know Mrs. MacDonald? She played at the musicale Grandmere gave during my Season? The one you performed at. She was Miss Perry then.”

“Miss Perry? Yes, I do believe so. She was quite accomplished at the pianoforte.”

Christiana turned from the mirror, tossed the gown on the bed, and came up behind her. “Your hair looks lovely, Mariel. Any more and it will be overdone.”

Mariel put the brush down and turned toward her sister-in-law.

“Besides,” Christiana continued, “it does not matter what your hair looks like. You are positively glowing. This outing must be about more than a visit to Leicester Square.” Christiana shook her head. “Do not try to think of an explanation. I am not asking for one.”

Mariel turned back to the mirror. She did look happy and excited, the blush on her cheeks entirely natural. “It’s nothing really, Christiana, only something that Edward and I discussed yesterday.
