WHEN SUSANNAH GOT BACK to the office, the first thing she did was to pop her head into Rita’s office. The secretary looked a bit wary.

Susannah didn’t blame her. “I’m sorry for that outburst. I hope the client didn’t go screaming off down the street.”

“No, though I’m sure for a moment he wanted to. Alison came up just then, so it was all right.”

Susannah felt relief flood through her. “Next time, I’ll look around to make sure there aren’t any clients in the room before I explode. I promise, Rita.”

“That would be good. As long as you’re here—” She reached for a file on the corner of her desk.

“I’ll come back in a minute, all right? I really want to clear things up with Alison first.”

Rita said dryly, “She said she wanted to see you, too.”

“Ouch,” Susannah muttered. “Is she down in her office?”

“No, she and Kit are in the conference room. It’s not a private session, though. She said to send you in.”

Susannah faced the closed doors of the conference room with trepidation. It wasn’t that she was expecting any kind of reprimand; no one of them had that sort of power over the others. But the idea that she had disappointed her partners, had made life and work more difficult for them, was worse than any sort of scolding could be. They’d all worked hard to build Tryad, but any one of them could tear the entire structure down with a single act of carelessness.

The pocket doors were eight feet tall and solid oak, but so perfectly balanced that they moved with the touch of a finger. Susannah slid one door aside and cautiously put her head in, ready to back out if the conference looked serious after all.

The video script Alison had been working on for weeks was spread across the long table, and Kit was standing atop one of the leather chairs in her stocking feet. Susannah thought she might be demonstrating how to get a particular shot, but she didn’t quite want to ask.

She didn’t think the door had made any noise at all, but two heads turned abruptly toward her as if pulled by a single string.

“Sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“We’re almost finished,” Alison said.

“And in any case, I can’t possibly concentrate on mere video now that you’re here.” Kit jumped down from the chair. “Who have you murdered, Sue? Pierce? Marc Herrington? Someone we’ve never heard of?”

Susannah sighed. “Nobody at all.”

“That’s the way, dear,” Kit said approvingly. “Deny it to your last breath. Did he or she deserve it? And do you think you’ll get away with it, or will Ali and I have to take over all your work? If that’s going to be a problem, maybe the three of us together can come up with an alibi.”

Susannah stuck her tongue out at Kit and turned to Alison. “Look, I’m really sorry. Rita says I upset your client.”
