WHILE NOLAN DIDN’T believe in pushing drugs on his patients, he did feel that Abby might benefit from a mild sedative. She’d slept most of the day and knew it would help get her back on a normal schedule. More importantly, it should ensure she slept all night, hopefully without any bad dreams.

As he crawled beneath the covers of his own bed, he felt as weary as he’d ever been. It had been a long, emotionally exhausting day. Laura’s blood pressure had bounced all over the charts until things settled down, and of course they’d all been worried about Abby.

To his mind, there had only been two positive outcomes today. First, Abby wasn’t leaving the island. Maybe it was simply because it was his home and he loved it, but he thought Casteloria was a great place to lick one’s wounds and heal. Plus, it meant a lot to Sam and Laura to have her stay on for the summer as had been originally planned.

Secondly, Liam was furious. When he’d finally left the apartment, he’d been bent on demanding an investigation into the board of directors and teachers at Lockwood Galloway School for Girls. He might not have as much clout as the Queen of England, but Nolan suspected that when the king of even a small country took notice of the goings on at a private school, the Board of Education at the state level was likely to sit up and listen.

He really hoped there would be an investigation, and that it would turn up something to absolve Abby — at least in her mind. If some sort of real evidence wasn’t found, she would always feel responsible. He had no doubt she’d move on with her life, but it would always be there, and she’d always wonder if there was something she might have done to prevent it, or at least to have changed the outcome.

Rolling over and punching his pillow into a more comfortable shape, he scoffed at his thoughts. He didn’t know Abby well enough to make those sorts of assumptions, and early experience with her should prove that beyond question.

Except he did know, and it was because he’d misjudged her so badly that he knew this would bother her forever. And he didn’t want it to. He didn’t want her to be sad or unhappy over something she had no control of.

The more he thought about it, the more he worried about her, and the more he wondered why. He barely knew the woman, for heaven’s sake. She was practically a stranger — and yet he found himself pulling on a pair of jeans and ragged tee shirt because he wanted to check on her one more time before he called it a night.

Cameron and Laura’s apartment was dark and quiet as he crept up the stairs and into Abby’s room, but he was glad he’d decided to return. Illuminated by only the moonlight, he could see that she still slept, but fitfully, tossing and turning, trying to escape whatever demons were haunting her dreams.
