Chapter 9

Mia

Five years later…

I sat in the meeting room, going over the notes for the leadership conference that I was prepared to speak at. This was the first time that I was set to go in front of an audience this large. I had been told that there were close to four hundred people in the audience, waiting for me to address them. My hands shook as I held the paper. The air conditioner swirled throughout the room, but I was numb to the cool breeze of the wind. Beads of sweat formed on my brow as I tried to steady my breathing.

Moments later, there were two knocks at the door before it slowly pushed open. Verna walked into the room with a wide smile on her face.

“Are you ready? We will be getting started in about five minutes.”

“Five minutes?”

I asked, hoping that I’d heard her wrong.

“Yes, five minutes. What’s wrong?”

Her eyebrows furrowed. She had been the one pushing me to start this ministry and since it began, she had been right beside me the whole time. I didn’t respond, so she closed the door and pulled out a chair. I didn’t want to look into her eyes because she had a way of stealing the secrets of my soul with her love-filled gazes.

Finally, after a few seconds of silence, I spoke up.

“Are you sure I am ready to do this? I mean, there are a lot of people out there, and what if I look like an idiot? What if I stumble over my words and people look at me like I don’t even belong up there? What if—”

“Sweetheart,” she said, sliding her hand onto my shoulder.

“Sweetheart, I am going to need you to calm down, all right? That is nothing but the enemy trying to flood your mind with a bunch of nonsense. Now, we have rehearsed this time and time again. We have prayed and received confirmation repeatedly. Now, we can pray again, but I think God is going to shake his head at us and say, ‘ye of little faith.’”

She laughed, but she was right. I had felt the same bouts of fear shooting through me times before, but she would quickly be there to pray me through and after that, I’d be ready to face the world.

“Ok,” I said, exhaling.

“All right. I know it is the enemy, but I can’t help it. This is my first time.”

“I know it, honey. I will be right by your side, even while you are in front of them. If you ever need support or anything, just give me a wink and I’ll be up there and help you with whatever you need. Whether it is a kick in the butt, or a short assurance prayer. I’ll be there, all right? Besides that, the Spirit will be right there with you, and I believe that He will be able to calm you a lot more than I ever would. Do you trust Him?”

The vents pushed the cool air around the room.
