Chapter 14
Urgan
They lost the pursuit through a combination of killing the town orcs who had caught up, being faster than the rest, and simply having more luck. Walking in the stream also helped their tracks to get completely untraceable.
Urgan didnât delude himself. They would be tracked down finally if they stayed in these forests. He ground his teeth together to hold back a groan of disappointment in himself. If only he had killed that silver-eyed orc! Something told him he was Urganâs personal enemy.
He breathed in deeply, guiding the air to his pain and let the breath rush out of him, taking a part of his rage and tension away. He would worry about that later.
Soon, when the gray light of dawn colored the world in washed out, cool hues, they reached the camp. There, the rescued children and females flocked to the fire, plentiful clean water, a warm soup waiting, and their friends and family.
Careena, who had been nervously awaiting their return, the baby sleeping in her arms, sobbed with relief when both her daughters knelt down by her sides, crying and holding on to her clothes and hands.
The heart-wrenching image soothed some of Urganâs disappointment. At least the prisoners had been freed.
Let them rest, he thought, sinking to the ground near to where the children were sleeping, Saf safely among them. Let them enjoy the moment of respite because as soon as everyone got a bit of relief, they would have to start planning for a war.
The rescue hadnât gone according to plan. They were attacked, and they killed many of the local orcs. And that meant retaliation. Orcs would never let such a thing slide, and Urgan with his band had mere days before the town orcs found them to get their revenge.
He didnât hope for more than a week.
With a deep sigh, he let go of the world and sank into a dreamless sleep.
When Urgan woke up, it was still before noon, and the camp was mostly asleep. Only the children who had been left in the camp were cavorting around, under Madralâs bloodshot but alert eyes.
âPapa!â Saf climbed into his lap as soon as Urgan sat up, his body twinging with the usual assortment of aches and pains that had been made worse by last nightâs adventures and insufficient sleep. âYou brought them back! Myria said they wanted to cut her open and look at her insides, papa! Itâs so good you got her before they did that!â
She was shivering, and Urganâs mind filled with an orange, buzzing mist of wrath. Myria was half-human. Just like Saf. And the local orcs had been planning to kill her to examine her innards?
He held Saf closer, shooting a questioning look at Madral.
âIt gets worse,â she said, her words crisp, her eyes dry and yet filled with sorrow. The cub in her arms made a sleepy sound, and she shushed him with a soft word. When she looked back up, her face was hard with rage.
Urgan understood. Some crimes were too atrocious to be wept over.
