Chapter Sixteen
Four months later
âItâs not your fault,â Iyana said, bringing her grandmother her morning tea. âPlus, heâs at peace now, Nana. Itâs been months. Time for you to start living.â
âWell, at least summa of it is. How can I when I know what Iâve done? Nah, baby. Nana gone sit right here and enjoy you and this here baby,â she sniffled, sitting up to squeeze some fresh lemon in tea.
She hadnât gone out much since Papa Bâs death short of church, and even then, she could barely get through service without crying. If the choir sang his favorite song, it took at least three deacons to get her off the floor and out of the church. She was pretty upset Iyana wasnât with her boyfriend, but glad she had some company. Especially since Myriah chose not to come around.
âNana, this baby is going to be fine. Itâs you Iâm worried about. Heck, even Myriah and Ish are fine. He hits me up from time to time on Facebook. I told you that. And she and her father are finally getting to know each other. That should make us all feel better.â
Patting Iyanaâs leg, she smiled at her and felt proud she turned out so good after everything sheâd been through. Sheâd brag that Iyana was in a class of her own to anyone who would listen, especially in church, hoping she would help her find a boyfriend. She knew Iyana was lonely, but she hid it well, instead, throwing herself into being a homemaker short of dancing at the community arts center in the afternoons.
The saga with Elijah was over after he pled not guilty by reason of insanity. While Iyana was sleeping better, every now and again she would still have nightmares. Poor Angel was being raised by Sashaâs grandparents, leaving her with no way of staying in touch. She just prayed she would get to have a normal life, even without her parents.
âSo how the rehearsals going? Nana canât wait to see whatcha done this time. Oh, chile. All that sanginâ and dancinâ make Nana really happy when I see you out there in the den playinâ around. That baby gone be a dancinâ machine,â she teased.
They were approaching summer and the kids were all excited about Dreamgirls. She often thought of Ishmael. She wanted to invite them out, but she quickly talked herself out of it. She missed Keyz something terrible, but it was over. Nana needed her. Keyz had his crew and a gang of women that would jump to be in his bed.
âUh, I donât know about that, but he or she will definitely know music and have some coordination,â she said, drifting off with Keyz on her mind. She missed him and thought about the last time they went dancing. He had two left feet, but he hung in there with her all through the night. It was one of her fonder memories of them.
âThinkinâ âbout him, I see.â
âYea, but no worries. We tried,â she said, shrugging her shoulders.
