Rusty stayed in wolf form after it was finished. He stopped once, straying from Sam and Mike’s scent trail to another bay laurel tree to chomp on a few leaves, clearing the taste of blood from his mouth. Even before he finished that he was running again, letting the leaves fall from his mouth as he went.

He could feel the moon’s approach; they had maybe ten minutes to spare by the time he reached the truck and shifted back to his human shape. The back door popped open, letting out the smells of Mike and Sam wrapped in the familiar home-territory scent of his own truck. Rusty climbed in at once to find Mike sitting sideways on the bench seat, his back against the opposite door. Sam was in the passenger seat, kneeling backward in the seat with his arms wrapped around the back.

Rusty leaned up and kissed him briefly, giving the nape of his neck a reassuring light squeeze.

Sam kissed back and said, “You’re clean.”

Rusty glanced down at himself. He was also naked, but that wasn’t anything he was worried about alone with his pack.

“Yeah, most stuff falls away when you shift,” Rusty said. He rubbed absently at the side of his head, where the bullet graze was already a scar, faintly itchy but otherwise healed.

“Speaking of,” Mike said, and Rusty looked at him and smiled.

“You picked a good time to get bitten,” Rusty said. “Four days after the full moon, so turning’s not gonna be too dramatic. You probably won’t wolf-shift until your first full moon—tonight it’ll just be faster healing, your senses coming in, that stuff.”

Mike raised his eyebrows. “And I’m off the hook for alpha mind control?”

Rusty tilted his head. “I killed your alpha, so now I’m your alpha, unless you want to run back into the woods and ask one of those guys to re-bite you in the next few minutes.”

Mike snorted. “I’ll take my chances on you, team leader.”

“Thanks, Gunny,” Rusty said with a smile. It might be a little weird, outranking Mike all of a sudden, but Mike had never had any trouble listening when Rusty had a better idea, and Rusty didn’t plan on being the kind of controlling psycho Schwartz would have been if he’d had the chance.

“Are you the whole chain of command, then?” Mike asked, not looking at Sam so pointedly that Rusty couldn’t miss it.

Rusty shrugged and kept his gaze steady on Mike. “There are other packs up the chain—I’ll still owe loyalty to my parents’ pack, and through them to the senior alpha of the family. But an individual pack’s kind of like a recon team—small, mobile, operating independently.”

Mike nodded at the analogy and raised his eyebrows. Didn’t answer my question.

Rusty glanced over at Sam, and he couldn’t help thinking yes, mine, all mine. He couldn’t mistake how thoroughly Sam had chosen, and allowed Rusty to choose him, today. He kept his gaze on Sam as he said, “The pack is usually run by the alpha and his mate, but that part depends on what Sam wants to do.
