The Yankees didn’t win another game until Mantle hit a home run, the night of Aug. 22, while Stottlemyre pitched a shutout.

That was the beginning of the comeback. The way Mantle forced himself seemed to make all the other players more determined, perhaps a little ashamed of themselves; the way he hit restored everyone’s confidence and relaxed the other hitters.

Still, on Sept. 4, the Yankees were four games behind, and the bull pen was still a terrible problem. On Sept. 6, Ramos arrived, and the lift in morale was visible even before he threw a pitch. The Yankees knew what Ramos could do; he did it, and the final drive gathered full speed.

Since Stottlemyre came up, the Yankees have won 14 of the 19 games started by him and Ford.

Since Mantle went back to work prematurely, the Yankees have won 24 and lost 9.

Since Ramos arrived, the Yankee record is 15-3.

Meanwhile, the Orioles have been 11-12 in September and the White Sox 10-10. Both simply found their level. Each has 90 victories with eight games to play, and neither team figured to win that many before the season began.

The Yankees figured to win 100, and they’ll come close. The harmonica story is a good one, worthy of a place in baseball’s anecdotal lore; but it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
