DAMIEN

Lauren and Aiden were already out the door. I needed to talk to Aiden about the acquisition. I started after him.

"Damien!" Dad called out to me.

I turned around to face my father.

"We're going to have to talk later."

"I know," I replied. "I just have to get some information to Aiden before he goes on his trip."

Dad gave me the nod, saying I could leave. I rushed to catch up with Aiden and Lauren, who were at the elevator.

"Aiden!" I called out as the elevator door opened. I yelled loud enough so the other people on the floor would hear me. Aiden would feel compelled to turn around. He turned to me.

"I need a word."

Aiden turned back to Lauren and motioned to her he would catch the next elevator. She nodded. The doors closed.

I caught up to him and pushed the button to call the next elevator.

"What do you need, Damien?"

"It's about the Rexford Drugs deal," I answered.

The next carriage arrived. We both walked into the elevator. We were alone. He turned to me the moment the doors closed. "Don't worry, I'll handle it."

Oh, for crying out loud! "You don't even know what I want to talk to you about."

"Don't worry about Lauren," he said.

"Is there something going on between you and her?"

"I don't need your lecture, Damien."

Until recently, I would've been very judgmental about Aiden. Hell, I was judgmental right now, but considering recent events, I didn't want to tell him anything.

"That isn't what I want to talk to you about," I said.

He folded his arms. "Then what?"

"There are a few employees at some stores that I got to know pretty well, an—"

Aiden interrupted me. "You want to make sure I will not fire some of your favorites."

"Yeah."

"You're always the one telling me I shouldn't get so attached to people and to let business be the business."

"I know, but can I send you a list? It's a short one."

"I'll look at it."

“Will you promise me not fire the person at the top of the list?"

Aiden shot me an incredulous look. He knew this was out of character for me.

I let my desperation show. "I'd owe you one."

Aiden raised an eyebrow. "You'd owe me a favor over not firing an employee?"

I nodded.

Aiden's expression softened. "No favor needed."

I took a deep breath. Deep down, I knew I could count on Aiden. What he lacked in business acumen, he made up for in magnanimity. "Thanks."

"Are you okay?" he asked. "Why aren't you going? Why are you letting me take a piece of this deal?"

"Not an enormous piece," I said.

"It's gonna be a sizeable piece."

I sighed and nodded yes.

Man, I'd really fucked up. I was losing millions of dollars on a deal I'd put thousands of man hours into. All because I didn't dare go back to South Florida and face the mess I’d made.

No, I wouldn't give Aiden any flavor of the "don't fuck up with Lauren" speech. It would make me the biggest hypocrite in the world.
