Whatever the purpose of the invasion, Abdul Rahman and his main force was headed toward Tours by the beginning of October 732, and Tours was one of the most important cities in Gaul. As Civitas Turonum, it was the capital of the Roman province of Lugdunum and protected the important trade routes along the Loire. A 4th century bishop of the city, Martin of Tours, was widely venerated as a saint throughout Western Europe, and Tours became a site of pilgrimage and commerce. It’s apparent that Tours was the intended destination of the Moorish army, and though the battle has taken its name, it is unclear whether Tours was the actual location of the climactic confrontation. The battle is often named after Poitiers (Pictavium for the Franks), a city about 65 miles south-south west of Tours, and it probably occurred somewhere between the two. After the famous Battle of Poitiers was fought in 1356 between the French and English, it became more convenient to name the 732 battle after Tours.
