Chapter Twelve
Albert
On board the train to London the next day, we spoke little, having fully covered the topic of Silas Kingman while other subjects we might have discussed were too personal to speak of in a crowded train compartment.
Justin tipped his hat brim and slept a bit. I tried not to look at him too often, but his chiseled profile against the window and those lips Iâd kissed only yesterday were difficult to tear my gaze away from. Even when I glanced around at other dozing passengers, I felt him beside me. When the train hit a rough patch of tracks, I jostled against him. His elbow bumped my ribs, my leg pressed against his in the narrow seats. I had to breathe deeply to control my rising erection. His proximity was too arousing. I craved his body again, but that wasnât likely to happen while we were accomplishing our task in London.
And afterward, if we confronted Kingman and released Russell, there would be no reason for Justin to return home with me. Although, maybe it would be important for him to check and make sure the house was ghost-free. Foolish me, inventing an excuse to extend our interaction.
We soon arrived at Paddington Station. Escaping the hustle and bustle of a workday morning, we hired a hansom to take us to Bainesâs office located on a street of quiet, sedate businesses. His secretary ushered us into a somber, dark-paneled room that belied the sunny disposition of my solicitor. His cheerful demeanor, freckled face, and mop of red hair were an utter contrast to his serious occupation. One of the first things Iâd done after Father died was replace our archaic family lawyer, Mr. Seaton, with Roderick Baines, a man lively and intelligent enough to help steer my business concerns into the twentieth century.
âGood morning, Mr. Henderson,â Baines greeted me. âHow was your trip?â
âUneventful. May I introduce you to Mr. Crump, an acquaintance.â I didnât allude to his profession or the reasons for our association and Baines knew better than to ask. But he gave Justin an inquisitive look as they shook hands.
As soon as we sat, Baines handed me several pages containing all the information heâd gleaned. âSilas Kingman is the younger brother of Sir Cyrus Kingman, whose house you now occupy. He stands next in line for the baronetcy since his nephew is deceased and there are no other heirs. As youâre probably aware, the title is all the Kingmans have left, since their financial prospects are bleak. Sir Cyrus and his wife completely withdrew from society after the loss of their only son. Silas seems to get by doing as little as possible. He is a perpetual houseguest, staying with various acquaintances until heâs reached the limit of what is acceptable. Currently, he resides with the Lloyd Smithers family at the address you see there.â
âI know Marilyn Smithers as she attended a few of Lady Bartonâs gatherings,â Justin said. âI believe the Smithers family has several young children, two girls and a boy.
