Alfwen fell back into the rhythm of basting and dredging, and then helping Swein divide the fresh herb salad into a large glazed bowl for the high table and smaller wooden bowls for the rest. After that came a rush of serving and frequent calls into the kitchen for more bread trenchers. Sometime after the subtleties were whisked away by five richly dressed servers, Alfwen settled back onto the stool in a daze.

She must have dozed, for the next thing she knew, Swein was holding a sage tisane under her nose.

“Drink and then eat,” he said. “I have saved you some of the beef you basted.”

Alfwen stifled a yawn and a moan that she wanted to sleep. The tisane helped and the meat was delicious, tender and tasty, and she wanted more.

“Try mine, too,” Swein chuckled and handed her a bowl of stew. “See if you can guess the spices.”

They often played this game, but Alfwen spotted the slight tremor in Swein’s hands and answered quickly, “Only if we share,” and offered her spoon.

“Done,” he said, and she shifted so he could share the stool with her. Though I rather I could sit with him on his knee.
