Breaking the Bondage of Envy
In the early years of my call to prophetic ministry, I had a “painful or resentful awareness of an advantage” enjoyed by the other prophets in the church and a “desire to possess that same advantage.” I was envious. And it got me nowhere. God was gracious and merciful to me, of course. But He would not let me advance to the next level of prophetic ministry until I renounced that envy and the covetousness associated with it.
Maybe for you it is not a title. Maybe you envy itinerant prophetic ministers who travel around the world speaking God’s words. That may or may not be God’s plan for your ministry, but you will not find out until you let go of the envy. Maybe you are envious of people with media platforms—TV, books or Internet columns—where they can share prophetic insights. That may or may not be God’s plan for your ministry, but you will not find out until you let go of the envy. Maybe you are just envious of how another prophet flows in his or her gifting. That attitude will not get you a stronger anointing.
Remember, no two prophets are exactly alike. God has a unique plan for your life and ministry, and you can trust that His will for you is good, acceptable and perfect (see Romans 12:2). God once said:
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:11–13
God spoke those words to Israel when she was facing captivity in Babylon. But the same could be said to prophets whom the enemy has taken captive. God wants to exalt you, but you first have to humble yourself.
I will never forget the day my mentor, who had been walking in prophetic ministry for decades, told me she considered me her equal. That was true humility on her part. Clearly, I did not have the experience or wisdom she possessed. But she was honoring me as one who had been through fire and become humbled enough to walk alongside her in this vital ministry. I had broken free of the bondage of envy.
