King

Addie didn’t want to go back to bed after he got her cleaned up, but with another kiss and a sly bit of wordless magic, she did as he asked. She let him tuck her in on his side of the bed, and promptly fell asleep. There was work to be done, and he couldn’t have her in the line of fire while he did what he had to do.

“Sweet dreams, Little Necromancer,” he whispered, kissing the top of her head before he left the room.

Outside the door, he sighed. “Tank, I have another job for you.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.” The pixie said, appearing near his shoulder.

“I need you to watch over her again,” he said. “And make sure you turn the hourglass I left on her bedside table every hour on the hour. Do not let the sand run out. I need to make sure she stays asleep and gets some actual rest before I get back. Understood?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. Tank is at your service.” The pixie saluted him, clicking his little feet together like a proper soldier.

Dante arched an eyebrow in amusement, and then looked back through the door where Addie was still sleeping soundly on the bed. Her little face scrunched in a sleepy pout. He didn’t want to leave her, but he had problems he needed to deal with. Problems that were better handled when she was safe between his sheets.

Taking a deep breath, he gave Tank one last nod, and started off down the hall in search of the first of his problems.

The big bad wolf, King Odin Shrike, had come for a visit, and if his instincts were correct, Aramis had left him inside the library they were slowly converting into his new office. The door swung inward as Dante approached, and when he stepped inside, sure enough, Odin stood before the fire sipping from a glass of whiskey.

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Dante said, smiling at the back of his head.

“One thing’s for sure. You have interesting priorities.”

“I’m not sure what you mean,” Dante said, flaring his nostrils.

The old wolf laughed. “I can smell her on you from here, boy.”

“Alright.” Dante chuckled. “I guess I’m not sorry.”

“Rule number one,” the wolf turned to face him. “If you’re honest then things will go a lot smoother between our two factions.”

Dante’s jaw twitched. “What do you want, Kujo? Why are you here?”

“To look you in the face while I ask you a question. I don’t like phones, and since you violated my territory a few days ago, I figured you wouldn’t mind the intrusion.” The wolf smiled, scratching at his salt-and-pepper beard.

King Odin, despite being at least a hundred and fifty years old, was the picture of health. His graying hair was the only sign of his advancing age. His body was still a wall of muscle, pulling his shirt tight around his biceps, and chest. His vest buttons were pulling so much, Dante swore they were seconds from shooting across the room like a bullet from a gun.
