As Karin DeShoreâs group of survivors sheltered inside the restaurant supply company, four more victims arrived, making it a group of ten. But DeShore was uncomfortable in the building and wanted to get her people out. She looked at her patients. They were a pitiful lot, injured or bleeding from multiple lacerations that were, for the moment, staunched by napkins and strips of tablecloth cut into bandages. What they really needed was a hospital. âAfter I bandaged everybody up and everybody was sort of calm, I went outside to see what I could do,â she said. She looked around. Through the haze she saw the North Tower above her, fire and smoke billowing from the top with more ferocity than ever before. They were too close, she thought; the tower was burning and it could be unstable. She went back inside and addressed the group. âI told them, âI canât force you to, but I donât know if we are going to be safe here.ââ8
She suggested they move farther away, receiving no argument. They went back out and walked through the dust and debris and haze, past bloody body parts, walked through the World Financial Center and into the curving esplanade that faced the North Cove Marina. Wrapped in bloodied napkins and caked in powdered cement, DeShoreâs ragtag group of survivors came up to the edge of the docks and looked down.9 They saw DeMarino. âJust then, a small Jersey boatâit was Jersey police officersâentered this little marina,â DeShore later recounted.
Thatâs when DeMarino looked up.
It was as if he was watching a movie about the walking dead.
